Boy with a Gun is the forthcoming LP from SEA STATE a.k.a. singer-songwriter Paul Foster von Kalben. Skillfully produced by John Critchley (Amelia Curran, Dan Mangan, Elliott Brood) with beautiful attention to detail, the result is a stylish acoustic pop record, reminiscent of early Bruce Cockburn, full of simple melodies and changes, with devilishly tasty phrasing, deft playing and a bounty of musical surprises. Some of Toronto's finest are included here including the absolutely haunting lap steel by the incomparable Christine Bougie, several cheeky and delightful horns by Shaun Brodie, a striking duet with local songbird Juliana's Daughter as well as some plucky banjo & mandolin from Dave McEathron of Alt. Country dark horses The Warped 45's.

The backbone of the record however is the skillful finger-picked acoustic guitar riffs and stealthy voice of PFvK (who currently also doubles as Toronto's go to source for seafood for the city's top chefs...), Boy with a Gun gracefully breezes through some disparate musical territory from the downright catchy jangly folk of Canyons & Valleys to the coolly re-imagined late 70's FM disco in Too Late to Know; dotted with some surprising, judicious psychedelic sparks in between. It all comes off effortlessly in the crafty hands of producer John Critchley, who is quietly staking his claim to some of the most interesting records coming out of the Canadian independent music scene in the past decade.
