The 12-tone compositional technique; devised by Arnold Schoenberg, ensures that all twelve notes of the chromatic scale are sounded as often as each other. The music avoids being in 'a key' and prevents the emphasis of any one note.
The 'tone row' series in this piece: G, D, A, C#, F#, E, B, C, Bb, Ab, Eb and F is transformed to 'Retrograde', 'Inversion' and 'Retrograde Inversion'. The supporting "harmonies" obide by the same rules.
