Lyrics:
Key of Em

It was a [Em] lovely summer’s morning, An [Am] off-day in LA
[Em] So thought one Dock Ellis, As [B7] he would later [Em] say.

His [Em] girlfriend read the paper, She said, [Am] “Dock, this can’t be right...
It [Em] says here that you’re pitching, In San [B7] Diego to-night”.
“I Got [Em] to get you to the airport”, So [Am] off Dock Ellis flew.
His [Em] legs were a little bit wobbly, And the [B7] rest of him was [Em] too.

[Em] Took a taxi to the ballpark, An [Am] hour before the game,
Gave [Em] some half-assed explanation, Found the [B7] locker with his name.
The [Em] organ in the upper deck, Played [Am] all the schmaltzy hits
You [Em] could hear it in the club house, While [B7] Dock was getting [Em] dressed.

[Em] His sunglasses he reached for, From his [Am] locker, in a case
Dock [Em] Ellis pulled his jersey on, Then he [B7] put them on his face .
Time [Em] came to go on out there, [Am] Down the corridor,
The [Em] walls were a little bit wavy, There were [B7] ripples in the [Em] floor

[Em] He went out to the bullpen, To [Am] do a bunch of stretches
[Em] Loosen up a little, [B7] Throw some warm-up pitches.
All [Em] rose for the national anthem, People [Am] took off their hats.
Fire-[Em]works were exploding, Cokes were [B7] already going [Em] flat.

[Em] Dock was back there in the dugout , So [Am] many things to watch.
Some [Em] players spit tobacco juice, And [B7] others grabbed their crotch.
The [Em] umpire hollered, “Play Ball!”, And [Am] so it came to be,
Doc’s [Em] Pirates batted first, And when [B7] they went down 1-2-[Em] 3.

Dock’s [Em] catcher put his mask on, And he [Am] handed Dock the ball
It was [Em] 327 feet, To the [B7] right & left field walls.
The [Em] Pirates took the field then, And [Am] Dock stood on the rubber,
He [Em] bounced a couple of pitches, Then he [B7] bounced a couple [Em] others.

[Em] You might say about that day, He [Am] looked a little wild.
The [Em] lead-off batter trembled, Nobody [B7] knew why Ellis smiled.
You [Em] walk eight and you hit a guy, The [Am] things that people shout...
Es-[Em]pecially your manager, But he [B7] didn’t take Dock [Em] out.

Dock [Em] found himself a rhythm, And a [Am] crazy little spin.
A-[Em]mazing things would happen, When Dock [B7] Ellis zeroed in.
Some-[Em]times he saw the catcher, Some-[Am]times he did not.
Some-[Em]times he held a beach ball, Other [B7] times it was a [Em] dot.

Dock was tossing comets, That were [Am] leaving trails of glitter
At the [Em] 7th inning stretch, He still [B7] had a no-hitter.
So [Em] he turned to Cash his buddy. Said, [Am] “I got a no-no going”
Speak-[Em]ing the unspeakable, He [B7] went back out there [Em] throwing.

[Em] Bottom of the ninth, He stood [Am] high upon the mound.
Three [Em] more outs to go, He’d have his [B7] name in Cooperstown.
First [Em] up was Cannizzaro, Who [Am] flied out to Alou.
Kelly [Em] grounded out for Dean, The [B7] shortstop yelled, “That’s [Em] two”.

It [Em] must’ve been a mad house, The [Am] fans upon their feet
The [Em] Little Ones among them, [B7] Standing on their seats
Next [Em] up would’ve been Herbel, But [Am] Spezio pinch-hit.
He [Em] took a 3rd strike looking, And offic-[B7]ially, that was [Em] it.

[Em] It was a lovely summer’s morning, An [Am] off-day in LA,
So [Em] thought one Dock Ellis, As [B7] he would later [Em] say.
