COUNTRY SONG WORKSHOP

Country Song Workshop, or CSW, is a place for songwriters to learn more about the craft of songwriting. Audio lessons will be posted on this page’s music store from time to time and will be available for download. It is also a place to network with other songwriters.

CSW is run by Brent Baxter, a songwriter. He was a writer on the top five Alan Jackson hit, “Monday Morning Church,” which won a 2005 ASCAP Award as well as a 2005 “Songs I Wish I’d Written Award” from the professional members of the Nashville Songwriters Association International, or NSAI. Brent also has cuts by Randy Travis, Lady Antebellum, Lonestar, Ray Stevens, and several independent artists.

CSW AUDIO LESSONS FOR SALE:

"Going To The Movies"

Imagine yourself in a darkened movie theater. The movie starts to play, but there is just sound… no picture. You’d be upset, right? Well, then, why do we sometimes write songs that way? This lesson discusses the use and importance of visuals in a song.

"Grow Where You're Planted"

You don’t have to live in Nashville to write a hit song. Or even to get that song recorded by a major artist. This lesson details the importance of taking advantage of the opportunities that surround you, using Brent Baxter's story behind "Monday Morning Church."

"The Story Behind Monday Morning Church"

A lot of people ask me for the story behind this song. Did I lose someone close to me? Did I just make it all up? Check out this audio lesson and find out.

"How Do Songwriters Get Paid?"

As a songwriter, I often have friends and family ask me, "Hey, sold any songs lately?" Well, that's not exactly how it works. This audio lesson discusses how songwriters get paid for our work.

"Keep It Moving"

I'm sure you're familiar with the phrase, "You sound like a broken record." Well, if your song sounds like a broken record, it'll probably never end up ON a record. This CSW lesson discusses the importance of keeping the story in your song moving, taking the listener on a journey, and having a distinct beginning, middle, and end.
