Whereas the label “Progressive Metal” was mainly used during the 90's to describe any band featuring self-indulgent instrumental parafernalia, speed-of-light dimished arpeggios and a cast of castrati-like singers trying to high-pitch their labelmates; Coprofago's music, while being progressive and metal, disregards from the pretentiousness often found in the genere to focus on keeping things simple but still interesting.

Starting in 1993 as a death metal act, the release of prog-influenced 1997's "Images of Despair", and later 2000's "Genesis" gained the band comparisons with technical bands like Cynic, Meshuggah and also words of praise from Atheist, Darkane and even Watchtower members. Those words finally reach the ears of the French label Sekhmet that signed the band in 2002 for a re-edition of "Genesis". By the summer of 2005 the band head to Europe for some live dates prior to the release of their next album, "Unorthox creative criteria". Ranging from extreme death metal to jazz-fusion, "Unorthodox Creative Criteria" received excelent critics from media and fans alike.
