PUBLISHED:  May 01, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
For students enrolled in ARTM 360, Fundraising and Event Creation, that is exactly how they spent last spring semester. The intent of the class is to provide a hands on experience in the logistical implementation of running a successful fundraising event while bringing awareness to a selected cause or organization. From selecting a theme to choosing a cause, The class is responsible for all facets of the event from the budget and ticket sales to soliciting sponsorships and rounding up talent. All the while, learning the key components of creating, planning and executing an event.

Past classes have worked with local non-profits such as Carolina Studios and Upward Bound, this semester, The class chose to focus on something that was near and dear to their hearts....the Arts Management program at CofC. After hearing a lecture on the importance of creating an impact through an event, They took it a step further and decided they wanted to leave a legacy. They decided to create the Johnny Diamond Memorial Award to honor Johnny's impact on the music industry in Charleston. Johnny attended College of Charleston and worked with many local and regional bands, including the headlining act for the fundraiser, Long Miles.

Taking from their own experiences and knowledge of the needs of today's college student, the students developed an award that will be given to a student majoring in arts management to help defray costs associated with doing a music industry focused internship outside of Charleston. The first award will be made in the 2012-2013 academic year.
