THE NEW BUSINESS MODEL IS THE OLD BUSINESS MODEL

Terry Ellis was there for the British Invasion. He was there before Led Zeppelin was Led Zeppelin, before the Animals were the Animals, Rod Stewart was Rod Stewart or Cream was Cream. He was there for Procol Harum, Jethro Tull and later for Blondie and Billy Idol. Terry Ellis was in the music business then, and he still is today. He co-created Chrysalis Records in 1969, and worked with virtually every major British artist in the 1970's, whether through management, production, publishing, recording or booking. Following that, Chrysalis signed such acts as Blondie, Billy Idol and Pat Benatar. From crashing a Bob Dylan concert backstage in 1965, to his Imago Records signing Paula Cole, who won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1998, Terry has always been ahead of the curve.

On Saturday, May 10th at the Toronto Marriot Hotel, as part of the 2014 Music Summit, Canadian Music Week showcased his Keynote Presentation entitled The Music Business -- The New Business Model Is the Old Business Model. Terry eloquently argues that the Music Business hasn't changed; the act of making music and performing is still about "Artists on a stage" as it has been since Egyptian and Roman times. What has changed is the Record Business, a relatively new sideline of making music, and one that was never very profitable for even the most popular artists until the 70's and 80's.

Terry continues to believe that a Manager should have a close, personal involvement with their artists, and that that relationship is vital to an artist's career. He emphasized the importance of embracing new technologies if record companies and recording artists are to thrive into the 21st century.

Coming full circle, Terry is currently working on a stage musical version of Jethro Tull's "Aqualung", which he originally helped produce in 1971.
