In this lesson, Paul Gilbert covers the topic of Chromatic Riff, a new lick that he recently discovered. This is basically in E with a bit of fusion, which can be confusing, but he walks you through it slowly, step by step. The first note to start off this lick is B way up on the 19th fret, and then stretch out and pull off to the G note. The next move is unlike what you usually do it guitar. Typically in guitar playing, you would move over to the next string and do the same thing, but instead of going down, you go up, from D to F, both picked. This set is completed with three chromatic notes on the next string over, C sharp, C natural, and B. Once you get those seven notes, go on the 12th position to play the standard pentatonic scale, except just like you did before, reversing the notes on the B string, and ending the last three notes with a chromatic scale. The last set is D, B with a pull off, up on the B string, and the three chromatic notes. Again, following the same pattern.
