The Pace Report: "Canadian Treelines" The Christine Jensen Interview - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 15, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
Saxophonist Christine Jensen is taking a bold step as a musician as well as person. Her latest Justin Time Records release "Treelines" has allowed her to step into the role of composer and bandleader. Over the years she's developed her name as a well-known alto and soprano saxophonist in her native country of Canada leading such small units and recording such critically-acclaimed records like her debut "Collage," "A Shorter Distance," and "Look Left." Even though she's a brilliant writer, "Treelines" takes listeners back to those classic Gil Evans, Duke Ellington, and Maria Schneider recordings with her 18 piece jazz orchestra. The current theme of Christine's latest recording is the peaceful and serene environment she grow up in Nanaimo. All the compositions reflect all the nature and lakes she and her sister return to from time to time during their busy touring and recording schedule.

Christine studied jazz performance earning a Bachelors and Master's degree at McGill University. While there she developed her musical chops while playing with some of up-and-coming Canadian and American jazz musicians like Kenny Werner, Geoffrey Keezer, Steve Amirault, Lenny Pickett, Franck Amsallem, and Steve Wilson. In addition to her building a name for herself, she's also continues to collaborate with her older sister Ingrid, who plays trumpet on the latest CD.

"Treelines" is currently nominated for The Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of The Grammys) for the 2011 Contemporary Jazz Album Of The Year.
