Swiss Bossa Nova singer, Jenny Chi, is releasing her second album, “Live in Rio”. This refreshingly raw live recording from Rio de Janeiro features one voice, a guitar and a lounge by the sea. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed.
Live in Rio:
In “Live in Rio“, Jenny Chi & André Siqueiras revisit the glorious past of Bossa Nova, recalling the smell of tropical rain and the freshly moist earth that fills the air. And hanging on the wall to compliment the scene is a familiar picture, framed and faded, of a curved bay: Copacabana, 1962.
The album is as pure as the tale of its existence – an untainted snapshot of a musical encounter between the Swiss Bossa Nova singer, Jenny Chi and the young Brazilian guitarist, André Siqueira. The duo performed in a series of concerts in February and March of 2009 at the Bossa Lounge in the district of Leme, Rio de Janeiro, just a stone’s throw away from Copacabana.
The concerts at Bossa Lounge were recorded by sound engineer, Fabrizio de Francesco: at his disposal simply a SM58 vocal microphone and a line channel for the guitar. When Jenny returned to Rio in Spring 2010, de Francesco presented her mixes, in which he had preserved a sound of incredible naturalness and quality. Enthusiastic about the raw intimacy, the immediacy and the vitality of the recordings, it was clear to Jenny that this had to be made into a CD.
“Live in Rio” is being release in Switzerland in November 2010 by the music label, Martin Pearson Music (MPM). The duo is planning a 2011 Spring/Summer tour through Switzerland and neighboring countries.
By her debut album, “Jenny Chi – ChiBossa”, Jenny had gained ground in the local Bossa Nova scene. Already at a young age, the Swiss-Chinese singer devoted herself to Brazilian music. She went to live in Brazil, took Bossa Nova lessons and performed in concerts. Jenny describes herself as a passionate Bossa purist. She explains that in “Live in Rio”, she and her guitarist wanted to bring Bossa down to its essence - then adding with a smirk she states that now would be the time for new musical creation and discovery. Such innovation and excitement can be expected in the third album.
