Ary Barroso was born November 7, 1903 in Ubá, Minas Gerais, Brasil. The composer of a new genre of song called samba-exaltação, he created various pieces of music influential to modern-day Brasil, the most famous of his compostions being "Aquarela do Brasil," or simply "Brazil." Being good friends with Brasilian actress Carmen Miranda, many of his compositions were performed by her. Other artists who have interpreted his music include Silvio Caldas, Chico Alves, Joao Gilberto, Aracy de Almeida, Orlando Silva, and Caetano Veloso. The father of Samba died February 9, 1964 in Rio de Janeiro of liver cirrhosis.
