The most interesting aspect of Overseas musical dynamic is beyond the scope of strict craft or studio work; In fact, the way dual vocalists Will Johnson and David Bazan commune approaches that of the ineffable. While Johnson (Centro-matic, Monsters of Folk) can manufacture hope out of his darkest sneers, Bazan (Pedro The Lion, Headphones) is capable of dragging black clouds into a daydream.

In a way, they're the Arctic Circle; Johnson as the Midnight sun and Bazan as polar night. In leading tracks for Overseas — also featuring Matt and Bubba Kadane of Bedhead and The New Year — both voices can lament and praise, birth and destroy. As they come together, the expected conflict produces an almost ineffable joy (something that's not lost on those who've followed Bazan's publicized journey from religion to lack-thereof).

The tunes on Overseas self-titled debut? Remarkable (what a wasted word. Of course they are remarkable. We're in the business of remarking here). In any event, their LP dances with the obvious comparisons to their component pieces' outside work with plenty of dalliances into the heyday of 1990s alternative rock.
