Metal Wani's Chuck Marshall had the great fortune to spend a little time with DEAD CROSS bassist Justin Pearson to talk about the album, the upcoming tour, and the happy accident that put the band together.

Justin gave us some insight into how the band worked with Mike Patton. They gave him free reign with the songs to develop the lyrics. However, Mike was keen to include the band in his writing process. This led to a conversation about the unorthodox way in which the album was written.

We can thank Ross Robinson for the happy accident that brought Dave Lombardo, Mike Crain and Justin Pearson together. It turns out that they met working together as a backing band for a demo session that Ross was recording. The three of them hit it off and Dead Cross was born. When Dead Cross needed a replacement vocalist, Dave got in touch with Mike Patton to round out the band.

In talking about the music on the album, we asked how they went about choosing to cover “Bela Lugois’s Dead” by Bauhaus. Instead of doing a more traditional metal cover, the band went off into left field to embrace the unexpected. In the process, they made this song their own.

In our chat we asked Justin how he feels Dead Cross stacks up against the other bands he has been a part of such as The Locust, Retox, or Swing Kids. He reflected back on things he would have liked to have done differently and his good fortune to continue to work with brilliant drummers.

Briefly we touched on the upcoming tour which will include Secret Chiefs 3 opening up the shows. This should make for a diverse night of music. Finally, we asked if Dead Cross will continue on as a band after the tour. Given that the band is working on some new music, we can hope that they will keep sharing their creativity with us into the future.
