Who is Chapter 13?

Zero Basement (William George) & Kory Calico (Kory Oliver) make up Atlanta based hip-hop group Chapter13. These two MCs met while exploring the Atlanta underground hip-hop battle scene (Apache Café, Royal Peacock, 107.9FM, MC War etc.) in 2001. After discovering their like-minded passion for hip-hop music and similar lyrical styles, Chapter 13 was formed. Early recordings include “Rockstars” featured on the Sloppy Seconds compilation (distributed by Freshchest & executive produced by Kno of Cunninglynguists) and “Gold Chains” a collaboration with Atlanta rock/hip hop group Heavy Mojo (member B-Dirty & Kory Calico are cousins). Chapter 13’s first (still unreleased LP) is called “The Bottom Dollar LP”.

Where did the name come from?

What would you call two poor and struggling artists trying to make a name for themselves in a time where the only hip hop music being pushed on the public consisted of descriptions of flashy jewelry, selling drugs and/or cars with enormous rims? Chapter 13 seemed to say it all against the hypocrisy or hiphop-crisy portrayed by pop rappers and the media.

What is Chapter 13 about?

They speak best (but not only) to the ever-growing percentage of people unable to afford the corporate American dream and live a storybook lifestyle. They combine a fresh blend of socially conscious lyrics involving clever word play and intricate rhyme schemes with original boom bap production.

"We're just regular dudes with bills to pay who don’t trust the government and like to paint on trains" - Kory Calico

Inspiration/influences:

Everything from Mos Def to Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh, Gangstarr, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Nas, 90’s hip hop

What is “The Lyricists Cookbook”?

Chapter 13’s latest LP released 1/2010. 17 songs. Produced by the Beatchefs (Raekwon, Yelawolf, Yung Joc). The name “The Lyricists Cookbook” is a play on words inspired by “The Anarchists Cookbook” in combination with the Beat”chefs” production and Chapter 13’s politically charged lyrics.

Other Projects:

Zero Basement is currently in the studio with lead guitarist Moses Mo of Mother’s Finest working on a rock/hip hop type EP. Kory Calico is working on a hip hop project with DJ Mudfish and Tripp (Rising Sons) called W.I.C. Chapter 13 also has its third LP underway, to be produced by AmDex (Clan Destined.)
