The sounds that emerge from the speakers when this record is put on are downright terrifying, not to mention nonsensical. Those truly devoted will continue to listen and soon discover just how brilliant this record is. Every single sound is planned and precise, yet Captain Beefheart is able to make it seem free-form. Of course the lyrics don't always mean anything; they don't have to. Trout Mask Replica is the ultimate abstract-art of music. This is a Jackson Pollock painting in music form. Personally, we at VIMTV find the complexity and precision of this record nothing short of astounding and we describe the listening experience as excessively addictive, even if it isn't everybody's cup of tea.
