Frank Froeba: Church-Mouse on a Spree - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 28, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Here is a piece for the speed merchants among you who would like a change from the laid back salon pieces I mostly play! Frank Froeba (aka Froba, 1907-81) was a US jazz pianist and bandleader. At the time this piece was published, in 1936, he had just finished working with Benny Goodman and was establishing his own band while working as a house pianist for Decca. This is one of the most brilliant 'novelty' solos out there - and note how, about a third of the way through, Froeba seems to use arpeggiated chords with clashing harmonies to imitate the mouse squeaking! I have played this as printed, and given the speed, doubt if it is intended to be swung!
