ABOUT "BREAKOUT":
Breakout is a beautiful song. I'm not sure most would describe it that way, but it really is. The melancholy interplay of chords and melody are the sort of thing I love to write myself, and the intensity of the original production leaves a lot of room to arrange the song at the opposite dynamic end of the spectrum. This is another single take performance for the main vocal and guitar. It's truly live with no comps or tuning or any funny business. I used a few of my own favorite voicings to represent some of the chord changes, and I added some ambient electric guitar and strings to round it out (with a bit of a nod to Nick Drake). ABOUT THE “EVERYTHING LEFT TO WIN” PROJECT:
I love Foo Fighters. I think they’re one of the great Rock bands, and I think they’ve produced some of the great Rock albums of our time. Perhaps the greatest among them would be There Is Nothing Left To Lose, an album which starts strong and simply never lets up… The thing is, it’s not just the genre of its realization. And it’s not just the production or arrangement of the songs. It’s the songs themselves. The songwriting is fantastic, driven by chords and melodies in ways both fresh and interesting. This is exactly how good songs are written, and to a degree where I’d say this album is more “musical” than a lot of singer-songwriter albums receiving accolades for their atmosphere alone (even when the actual songwriting is bland). Some people might miss just how focused on melody and chord Dave Grohl's writing is if they don’t listen beyond distorted guitars and heavy drums… And that’s kinda where this project comes from. The thing about great songwriting like Dave’s is that it tends to transcend one form of realization. It’s bigger than the genre you first hear it in. Bigger than it’s original arrangement. That’s why Beatles’ songs can be covered in such a variety of ways and still be totally valid. Because they’re great songs. Everything Left To Win is a new take on Nothing Left To Lose. It’s my reimagining of an album I love. The lyrics on this record are brilliant as well.

Where the original album is forward and driven and intense and dynamic, I am taking an approach which is more subdued and haunting - less “Arena Rock” and more “Melancholy Indie Pop.”

I hope it "translates" as well for you as it has for me.
