Si tus penas no pruebo, Jesús mío,
vivo triste y penado:
dámelas por el alma que te he dado
que si este bien me hicieres, ay Dios,
como veré lo que me quieres!

Quiéreme bien, y en dármelas lo muestra
que es ley entre amadores
partir como los gustos los dolores,
que no es partir al justo
tener tu los dolores y yo el gusto.

Mas qué te pido yo que tu rae quieras,
si tu, mi bien, me quieres,
de suerte que por darme vida mueres?
Yo soy quien no te quiero,
pues viéndote a la muerte no me muero.

No quiero vida yo sin ti, mi vida,
si tu mi vida eres,
en ti mismo estarás, cuando quisieres,
que yo siempre querría
estar en ti. pues eres vida mía.

Ay si estuviese un hora yo contigo
y que esta hora fuese
tan grande que mayor el tiempo fuese
y que tanto durase
que tus eternos años igualase!

Bien sé que soy de pobres labradores
y grosera aldeana
y que tu majestad es soberana:
mas tu, que te apocaste,
subiste mi valor cuando bajaste.

En la cuenta no vale nada el cero:
mas tu. numero santo.
puesto al principio, vengo a subir tanto,
que si vienes a ensalzarme,
porque te humanas tu para endiosarme.

Dame, señor, tu cruz, dame tus clavos
para que no me huya,
traspasen las espinas de la tuya,
mi cabeza dichosa,
corona de tus flores a tu esposa.

Descansa un poco, dulce vida mía
de tu cruz en mis brazos
tercero sea tu cruz destos abrazos,
y así pareceremos
Dios hombre, el hombre Dios,
de amor extremos.

Sweet Jesus, if thy trials I do not prove,
my life is one of sorrow and of pain;
for the soul I gave thee, give them in exchange,
and if this favour thou shouldst grant to me, oh God,
that thou dost love me I shall see!

Love me well, and in giving prove thy love,
for lovers' rule ordains
that they should share the pleasures and the pains.
My portion, then, would be unfair
if I the pleasures and thou the pains should bear.

Yet, wherefore should I ask that thou love me,
when thou, my treasure, already lovest me so,
that to give me life thou to thy death must go?
It is I whose love for thee I should decry
if, seeing thee close to death, I do not die.

My love, I want no life if life is without thee;
my very life thou art,
and thou at will in thyself shalt reside,
for I at all times would in thee abide
who unto me mine own life dost impart.

Oh. that I one hour might spend with thee.
and that one hour become so magnified
that time itself thereby be amplified.
so long enduring in its spheres
that it might match thine own eternal years!

I know full well I am a humble soul.
mined from a peasant seam,
whereas thou art in majesty supreme:
but thou, in stooping toward me so,
hast raised my worth by making thyself low.

Zero by any reckoning, must count for nought,
but if by thine own sacred number I am preceded,
my value will thereby surely be increased.
Thus exalted, seeing that I am thine,
thou takest human form that I might be divine.

Give me, Lord, thy cross, give me thy nails.
that I may never flee,
give as a bridal crown to me
the thorns that pierce thy brow.
upon my blessed head that gift bestow.

My own sweet life, rest thee a while
from thy cross in my embrace.
and by that cross may we two be so braced
that the two extremes of love shall thus entwine:
God made human,
human made divine.
