Born on athletic fields across the nation, steeped in the tradition of military and outdoor pageantry, drum corps, bands, and color guards have a long history in America. Often rehearsing twelve hours a day through heat, cold, dust and rain, they create thrilling performances where athleticism, musical talent, kaleidoscopic movement, and showmanship merge into an art form that is both competitive and entertaining.

Rising from fertile midwestern fields, one drum corps, Star of Indiana, consistently set ever-higher standards of excellence. From its inception in 1984, Star of Indiana achieved successes no corps in history had ever accomplished in such a short time.

With its place in drum corps legend secure, Star moved beyond its earlier triumphs to bring the power, passion and precision of outdoor pageantry to the stage in a musical performance that we now call BLAST!

Blast! is a Broadway production created by James Mason and Cook Group Incorporated, the director and organization formerly operating the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps. It was the 2001 Winner of the Tony Award for "Best Special Theatrical Event" and also won the 2001 Emmy Award for "Best Choreography."

Blast!'s instrumentation is exclusively brass and percussion, a nod to the show's roots in the drum and bugle corps activity. Blast!'s performers use trumpets, mellophones, baritone horns, tubas, and a full complement of percussion instruments including snare drums, tenor drums, bass drums, xylophones and marimbas, tympani, and other standard percussion equipment. In addition, Blast! adds instruments not normally found in drum corps, such as French horns, concert euphoniums, trombones and bass trombones, and synthesizers. Accompanying the wind and percussion performers is a color guard, again in the style of marching performance.
