PUBLISHED:  May 16, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Nielsen: Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 35 (1912)
Erling Bloch, violin
Lund Christiansen, piano

Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, on March 1, 1938 (with a retake of the first side on May 20), on Gramophone Company 78-rpm matrices 2CS 839 through 2CS 842. Issued in HMV's Scandinavian Red Label series as DB 5219 and DB 5220.

Both performers on this recording were members of The Danish Quartet (the other members of which were Gilbert Jespersen, flute, and Torben Svendsen, cello), as the labels proclaim, giving the ensemble top billing over the players! The labels also describe the Sonata as being in G minor; however, this really only applies to the opening. As with most of Nielsen's mature works, "progressive tonality" is used, so that the work begins and ends in different keys - in this case, C major.

The Sonata is in three movements:

1. Allegro con tiepidezza
2. Molto adagio (at 7:01)
3. Allegro piacevole (at 13:34)
