Night Shift (Tiny Desk NPR) - Ben Suchy - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 29, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
I heard about this contest while driving out to work in the oilfield. Since I work for weeks at a time I usually bring a little recording setup in case there is some downtime. In 2015 I actually recorded an entire album in Bakken oilfield called "Fields of Bliss" which can be found at www.cdbaby.com.

I work the graveyard shift so sometimes its hard to get motivated, but a couple cups of coffee go a long way! I figured I could use my iPhone and iPad and try to sync it up to a recording. I didn't have a lot of time when I filmed this and the low end on my guitar got a little poppy, but i didnt have time to do it over. It sounds best with headphones or speakers rather than a laptop.

The song gives a window into life in the Bakken and being away from family and loved ones. 12 hour shifts aren't for the weak, and my hats off to all the tough workers out here in ND. There are dudes that got way tougher jobs than me and it's impressive when you hear some of em are thousands of miles away from home for months at a time. Covered in oil and mud, And if the ND winter don't send them home props to that!

Ben Suchy performs his original song Night Shift for NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. Written and recorded and filmed in the Bakken oilfield in North Dakota. 2016.
