Phil Emerson, "Boogie for Barney Kessel"- - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 14, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
I wrote this for Jazz Guitar great, Barney Kessel...I played an old well whipped Gibson Archtop guitar with a Charlie Christian Pick up, like Kessel used...That Bar P/U is essential to get the correct sound....Decade ago, I spent a LOT of time getting guitar playing "Right"...nice clean technique...cleanly articulated...then I discovered Barney Kessel...and it ALL went away!...his sloppy, "By the seat of your pants"..ALMOST messing up approach, to soloing...LIBERATED ME...I Loved his guitar playing...it was simply "Make a Joyful noise", but technically very challenging, to do....I learned a lot from him...so, I did every "Mannerism" I got from him, and put it into this song, as a tribute...I had to fight this damned guitar the whole time, but that "Push back" from the guitar, made for a cool gritty bluesy thing....I expected to hate this, and erase it...But, I sent it to Barney, who loved it....So kept the recording....Carl Zerbe asked me to put on my 2nd solo CD, so I did......
