--Overall Comments--

Here it is! SEASON FOUR! It's been a long wait, but boy was it worth it! This episode delivered, especially in the music department. The lack of songs was balanced out by some of William Anderson's best, most emotional, and motif-filled work for the series to-date. This season is shaping up to be a fantastic, yet fresh one.

On an overall rip quality note: this episode was extremely well-mixed sound-wise overall compared to season 3. The use of all the surround channels to deliver immersion is much more grand. This makes the episode sound exceptional, but does make the BGM ripping process more of a challenge. I removed as much talking and sound effects as I could, but many invade all the channels (I'm looking at you growing vines!), and the echoes in the many inside scenes cannot be removed. Overall the rips turned out pretty well, though!

--Track Specific Comments--

This. This might be my favorite BGM from the series so far. It's hard to top the ending music to "Return of Harmony," but the amount of emotion contained here is incredible. We start out with the intense theme we heard at the ending of last episode, allowing us to pick up right were we left off.

When Celestia appears on screen, the musical feels begin. When she first confronts Luna, the motif there is very similar to Luna's theme from "'Silly Sleep' / Princess Luna / 'It's A Horse Without a Head!'" from "Sleepless in Ponyville." We then enter an epic battle scene between the sisters unlike anything we've seen from the series thus far.

I do want to quickly comment on the lack of BGM during the next part, where Twilight is crying over Celestia's body. While music can evoke strong emotions, sometimes the lack of it can do even more. It was a fantastic choice by the show staff and Anderson to leave this part silent, so we can only hear Twilight and nothing else. It hit me like a train, and is definitely the darkest moment of the series thus far.

However, Celestia recovers and realizes she needs to wield the Elements of Harmony to defeat her sister. When Twilight realizes that this is actually a vision of the past, the BGM in the background is definitely Luna's theme from "Sleepless in Ponyville" as I mentioned above.

And then we get to what might have been my favorite part of the episode--Celestia banishing Luna to the moon. First off, the tear in her eye as she did so brought some to mine. Another small touch by the staff that goes a long way. What really drove the emotions home though was the reprise of "Celestia's Lament" from part 1, but with a much more monumental and filled-out feeling with the entire orchestra taking up the theme. That alone made this episode for me. (Watch in 1080p!)
