HARSH TRUTH - ...And That's The Harsh Truth - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 22, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Oh, it looks like I haven’t fulfilled my channel’s quota for rap-influenced hardcore this month. Same with last month. And the month before that. And the month before that. And the month before that. Huh.

Well, it’s a good thing that I’m a no-talent loser with no real obligations, otherwise I could’ve potentially been held accountable for something for once. God forbid. But regardless, this sort of music doesn’t really see itself on my channel all too often; shit, maybe not even at all, I can’t think back far enough to know if it has. If I were to guess, I’d say that it hasn’t, which is something that I’m working towards changing: y’know, just try to get a little bit more variety up on the Jimmy. These days, I’ve got all sorts of bands being sent to me on the reg, most of which being material that I quickly marginalize into something that “isn’t a good fit” for my channel. That’s a load of shit, music’s subjective as fuck and should be appreciated for what it is, not simply because it aligns with some pre-defined preferences. Some people say that I’ve got “good taste” or a “good ear” or something, but I dunno, it sometimes seems like I just listen to the same shit over and over. Maybe all of you are right, maybe punk IS boring. Maybe I should try and get out of my comfort zone a little... is it too late to transition into becoming an RnB-centric channel? I mean, we’re only, like, three hundred videos in, I’m sure there’s some room for change. There’s this sick R. Kelly tribute act that I found on Myspace the other day, I should really get to posting that.

But in the meantime, here’s Harsh Truth. They’re a group of hardcore shit-slappers (not to be mistaken with the scat-fetish subcategory of the same name) hailing from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which is a segmented piece of land off the southeastern coast of Canada that no American has ever given a shit about. But after hearing Harsh Truth, maybe...no, yeah, we still have nothing to care about there. As far as I’m concerned, Prince Edward Island can pull a California before California does and just sink right into the ocean. Uh, but not before Harsh Truth catches a life raft and gets out of their safely, of course. While this band’s sounds may be somewhat of a stranger to my channel, one of its members certainly isn’t. Some of his material has actually been posted on my channel in the past, of which I’m not at the liberty to name; if you’re a punk rock detective like me, you’d probably be able to figure it out just fine. Said material is a stark contrast to the music that’s found in Harsh Truth, which is why I was so surprised once I got a taste of it when a member—who I guess goes by the stage name of “Biff Chunksmash”—sent me an early mix of the group’s demo a little while back.

But I suppose that isn’t the only stark musical contrast to be found here: according to Biff, the group’s guitarist, Taylor “Prog” Keall, used to play in a ton of “weird prog metal bands” up in British Columbia, which is an influence that’s often heard in these songs (namely the twangy, discordant start of “Think Ahead”). On top of that, this is the vocalists’ first band, with him first being interested in playing guitar before “Prog” was brought on board; but Biff tells me that the guy owns the entire Clash discography on vinyl, which makes him more than qualified for vox in my opinion. Take Biff’s past musical efforts into account (which sounds nothing like Harsh Truth, trust me), and there’s just a shitload of conflicting musical influences at play, with the only thing that the group all shares in common is their love of rap music.
