PUBLISHED:  Nov 01, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Rose O'Brien's bassist and guitarist play John Renbourn's "Judy" and Davy Graham's "Anji" (recorded live, October 2012). For similar videos, visit http://www.youtube.com/user/RoseOBrienMusic.

John Renbourn's "Judy" appeared on his first solo album (1965). Davy Graham's "Anji" appeared on a 1962 EP and on his "Folk, Blues, and Beyond" album. A fingerstyle guitar standard, "Anji" (also spelled "Angi" and "Angie") has been recorded by numerous musicians, including John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Arlen Roth, Gordon Giltrap, Chicken Shack, and Paul Simon (on Simon & Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence album). Graham's version is heard on the soundtracks of Emilio Estevez's Bobby and the British mockumentary Confetti.

The video, "an extremely deep dive into the Mandelbrot set," comes from Archive.org's Community Video collection and was made by Chris Korda using his own Fractice software. For more information, go to fractice.sourceforge.net.

For musicians and audio nerds, here's the lowdown on our gear, live setup, and recording method.

Our bassist runs the signal from his Dobro fretless bass through a Fishman Platinum Pro-EQ. An unaltered signal goes to his Hartke amp (when we rehearse he uses a Fender Bassman). An eq-ed and compressed signal runs into our board, a Phonic Powerpod 620.

Our guitarist uses a Dunlop medium thumbpick and .0225 silver-nickel fingerpicks to play his Taylor 414 limited edition (spruce top, rosewood back and sides). He runs one signal from the Taylor's Expression System though a Baggs Para DI (for eq) and Zoom A2 (for reverb and chorus) before sending it to the board. Another, unaltered signal goes from the Baggs to a Fishman Loudbox and then to the board.

RCA-to-1/4-inch cables run from the PowerPod's tape outputs to a Zoom H4n set to stereo mode. We put the Zoom's WAV files into GarageBand, where we edit them—trimming the ends and adding reverb—before sending a compressed file to iTunes.
