Essiet Essiet - Bass

Theo Hill - Piano

Shot at Smalls in New York City, this meeting of the minds represents a bit of a pilgrimage on the part of Montreal Sax savant Al McLean. McLean's partner on this recording is none other than Azar Lawrence, a legendary figure of late '60's Jazz, and once tapped to replace John Coltrane on a number of commitments following the icon's unexpected passing.

McLean traveled to New York to present Lawrence with a fine tenor saxophone co-designed by the young saxophonist, and more simply, to make some music with his mentor.

A young prodigy during transformational period of the late 60's and early '70's, Azar Lawrence toured and recorded with McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis and Freddy Hubbard, among others. Lawrence is regarded by many as the embodiment of the style pioneered by Coltrane, and for the young McLean, the chance to share musical ideas on the bandstand with Lawrence was an particular honor.

"We speak the same musical language", explains McLean, "it's powerful... Azar was there when so many of these ideas were being worked out. It's a privilege for me to play with him, and get to know him."

Both McLean and Lawrence are playing on their own ARC brand saxophones, instruments that were co-designed by McLean. Among the finest new saxes on the market, ARC horns feature a number of innovations; from unique and tonally novel materials, to customer protection registration.
