WE RECORDED THIS... in Frasers lounge room.

Welcome back to WE RECORDED THIS, the series where we duck into our friends heated lounge rooms to stay warm and record collaborations. For our second episode I am joined by my long time friend and all around dream boat Ayleen O’Hanlon.

At the end of 2014, Ayleen and I put on a couple of joint headline shows, where we were fortunate to sell out the Aviary studios and Creative Hub in Abbotsford for two nights in a row. We finished both nights with a cover of Paul Simon’s tune Proof, taken from the album that came after Gracelands (I know, I know, there’s an album after Gracelands?)

It made perfect sense for us to perform this song. Firstly, it’s got great lyrics, and we wanted to show off a different side to the original. Secondly, Paul Simon is my favourite artist and I may have forced the point. But most importantly, for me, Paul Simon has laid a map to follow for a long lasting and creative career – that is, throw yourself into collaboration, and work outside your comfort zone. So that’s what we did…

After the second night of performing at the Aviary, studio owner and total legend Fraser Montgomery approached us, and offered to record the song for us in his studio. For free. (Remember what I said about him being a legend?)

We jumped at the offer, and I suggested we make it part of the WE RECORDED THIS series. He agreed, but there was one small hitch. WE RECORDED THIS is meant to be shot in my friends lounge rooms, not in the back room of a studio. His answer was simple…

Mate, I spend more time here then I do at home. This IS my lounge room.

And I was glad. For many of Melbourne’s creative types, it’s been our lounge room too at some point or another- downing cups of tea* and crashing out on the couches between takes, bumping into old friends, and taking turns spinning records. So here it is. Proof - WE RECORDED THIS in Frasers lounge room away from home.

Hope to see you again on the last Friday of next month.
