Superb footage! Event Review :

On the night of Atomic Jam's 16th birthday celebrations, a majestic red glow radiated from the Q Club as the venue's iconic tower loomed proud and tall over the Birmingham skyline ready to welcome Techno soldiers from far and wide. At the foot of the tower flocks of Techno enthusiasts turned out in their masses to bid farewell to the pioneering rave-haven partnership Atomic Jam shared with the soon-to-be-closed venue.

The Q Club and Atomic Jam have been through years of testing times, that has seen the duo seperated for years at a time. Forced into venue-surfing in 2003 when its original (and only) home was ordered to close it doors, Atomic Jam swooned around, touching down for short stints at a number of venues including The Sanctuary, Air and The Custard Factory. Failing to ever find a bond as strong as with its primary host, Chris Finke and the Atomic Jam residents were overjoyed to return home in 2008, when The Q Club re-opened its doors. Forward to January 2012, and the pair were reunited for one final party.

Inside, the dank and dishevelled church interior proved to be a crude contrast to the exterior's prominent grandeur, drenching the night's proceedings in an aura reminiscent of the Acid House and Techno of days gone by. Heading down the winding maze of cryptic corridors towards the main room, there were vast sections of the inner walls crumbling away in a poor state of disrepair. Fortunately, though overshadowing that was the pulse of pounding Techno!

Musically the night was a hit also with UK legends and regular guests Dave Clarke giving the Atomic Jam faithful exactly what he knows they want. And Ben Sims playing a Q Club classics Techno set that covered many of the finest elements of dancefloor orientated Techno that has ever existed. A truly historic set. Resident Chris Finke played the last set and it was also a fun mixture of tracks we had all grown up on.

So is this the end for the grade 2 listed Methodist Church's connection to underground Techno? Since this event it seems as the Q Club owner may have had a change of heart and decided not to cash in and convert the building into luxurious office space. So keep the faith, there may just be life in the old Church and it's alliance with Techno. The full Q Club experience, and all the small and large quirky details combine to make Atomic Jam at the Que Club, clubbing at its best. After all, Techno is essentially a religious experience, so it's natural home is the old place of worship, the Q Club - Birmingham.
