Begin Again began as a downtempo song I wrote in 2011 for Song-A-Day, at half the tempo of the album version, for drum, bass & voice. David Earl saw me perform the original version at Awaken Cafe in Oakland with Tom Lattanand's jazz fusion trio, and he heard something anthemic in it. When we got into the studio, he doubled the tempo (keeping the original vocal line exactly as it was), and an hour later, we had the song pretty much as it is on the album. Sometimes big changes just work.
