High Barbaree - a song of pirates getting their come-upance - Video

DESCRIPTION:
I had intended to sing The George Aloe and The Sweepstake. Although the words are oft quoted, I could not find a convincing tune -- but found lots of good tunes to the Coasts of High Barbery (Barbaree, Barbary), which was supposedly derived from the older ballad. Clint Hulton has several excellent examples, based on the sea songs & shanties published by Stan Hugill. I like this up-beat tune, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqqpcDAOSs8&feature=plcp , which starts uncomfortably close to that of the Golden Vanity. Afraid the capstan crew would find my interpretation awkward work but thankfully I'm not on board!. Sung by Alan Rosevear in Exeter. Roud Number 134.

HIGH BARBAREE
There were two lofty ships that from old England came,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
One was the Prince Rupert and the other Prince o' Wales,
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree.

"Aloft there, aloft," our jolly bosun cried,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
"Look ahead and look astern, a-weather and a-lee,
Look down along the coast of High Barbaree."

"Oh there's naught upon the stern and there's naught upon the lee,"
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
"But there's a lofty ship to wind'ard and she's sailing fast and free,
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree."

"Oh hail 'er, oh hail 'er," our gallant captain cried,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
"Are you a man-o'-war or a privateer," says 'e,
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree.

"Oh I'm not a man-of-war, nor a privateer," says 'e,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
"But I'm a salt-sea pirate, a-looking for my fee
Looking down along the coast of High Barbaree."

If you're a jolly pirate, I'll have you come this way,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
"Bring out your quarter-guns boys, we'll show them pirates play
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree."

So 'twas broadside and broadside, as hour on hour we lay,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
Until the Prince Rupert shot the pirate's mast away,
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree."

With cutlass and gun, O we fought for hours three;
Blow high! Blow low! and so sailed we.
The ship it was their coffin and their grave it was the sea
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree."

"Oh quarter! Oh quarter!" the pirate then did cry,
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
The quarter that we gave them, we sunk 'em in the sea,
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree."

Now gallant seaman all, I bid you all adieu
Blow high, blow low, and so a-sailed we.
This is the last news that I can write to you,
While asailing down along the coast of
