CEREAL KILLER - Demos - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 25, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Looks like I owe my boy Brandino a favor.

Neck Chop Records is an independent label/distro that you’re likely familiar with by this point – mind you, I’m using the word “likely” in the most literal sense possible here; so long as you give the SLIGHTEST shit about contemporary DIY punk, there’s a statistically high chance that you know about this Neck Chop thing. Be it as the distro that’s somehow got copies of just about every tape and record you could possibly care for, or as the label that’s been slinging vinyl at just about every previously-unappreciated punk group worth its salt, it’s clear that the Californian shop has already made a name for itself in the seven-odd months it’s been around. I mean, I don’t really know anything about this Brandon guy myself (technically speaking, I don’t know who any of you fuckers are either) but I at least know that this guy is actually DOIN’ it. There’s lazy, cynical little assholes like me; all talk, no bite, and provide nothing of value in our respective communities. And then there’s folk like Neck Chop, doin’ the fuckin’ thang. I can’t even jokingly shit on the guy, and that’s saying an awful lot. Props.

This 7” is part of Neck Chop’s recent batch of records, sharing a release alongside Warm Bodies’ “Domo” (https://neck-chop-records.myshopify.com/products/warm-bodies-domo-7), Lost System’s “No Meaning No Culture” (https://neck-chop-records.myshopify.com/products/lost-system-no-meaning-no-culture-7), and my personal favorite, Bleeding Gums’ “II” (https://neck-chop-records.myshopify.com/products/bleeding-gums-ii-7). Like the previous batch of releases, all of these are simply vinyl reissues of the group’s preexisting material, which is sure to appease collector culture geeks whose precious record collections are only gonna warp to shit once climate change/World War 3 comes along and fucks us. Whichever one comes first, maybe both at the same time, who knows, who cares? We sure as hell don’t. Regardless, Neck Chop’s primed and ready to take your money for these things, so if you’re interested in any of those bands, I highly suggest that you mosey on down to one of those links and pick up whatever titillates your teats the most. There’s a link to Neck Chop for all the filthy American scum out there, and one to Anti Fade – the Australian label that split-released this 7” – for all the kangaroo humpers. Pick one and support some real art, dorks.

Anyways, the reason I’m sharing this record in particular is because it’s the only one of the bunch that brings forth remastered, never-before-heard material, crawlin’ in your earholes in the form of a previously unreleased track that was recorded within the same session as the preceding three, “I Don’t Want Any Sandwiches”. I figure fans of this kooky Geelong punk rock n’ roll band would appreciate it if I threw that new song up on the web, as my extensive (read: one or two minutes’ worth of) research shows that it hasn’t found its way on the internet yet. Not only that, but I figure this record would serve as a fine (read: obnoxious) introduction to those who didn’t catch the two releases that came before this re-release, with those being the three-track demo tape – same as this 7”, sans “I Don’t Want Any Sandwiches” – and a succeeding 7” EP, both of which being released in mid-2016-ish. And not only *THAT*, I figure it’d be appropriate for me to help publicize Neck Chop’s recent batch of records, considering Brandon was kind enough to send all of them over free of charge (read: Jimmy would feel like a massive fuckin’ hack if he took all those records without a peep. Thanks Branbino!). So here you go: Cereal Killer, a mean, irritating bunch of real-rockers, along with the entirety of their debut demo cassette – now in vinyl form. These guys are great. I didn’t know much about the group back when Australia’s Anti Fade Records dropped their first tape, and I sure as hell don’t know much about them now, but all I’ve been able to gather is that the band is from Geelong and shares members with the forever-stunning Ausmuteants, Wet Blankets, and Orb (?). Aside from that, I know that they’re really goddamn disgusting and bratty, and that I’ve given this demo way less attention than it deserves. Rampant, sprawly riffage, scratchy, unfledged vocals, and a disproportionally impressive knack for wild, less-than-predictable songwriting. This thing is the fuckin’ realest – pick one up before they’re gone. Probably. Eventually. Maybe? Depends on if and when complete nuclear annihilation occurs. I give it seven months. Actually… make it six, my money’s on six.
