Time And Time Again - Mike Rutherford (1980) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 23, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
"Time And Time Again" was released in the winter of 1980 on Genesis bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford's first solo album, Smallcreep's Day. The album reached number 13 in the UK Albums Chart. HQ FLAC Audio HD Video!

The album was produced by David Hentschel, who also produced the Genesis album Duke the same year. Anthony Phillips, Rutherford's original songwriting partner in Genesis, plays keyboards on the album. It was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, for tax purposes, in the fall of 1979. The title suite (occupying side 1 of the original European vinyl version and side 2 of the original US and Canadian vinyl versions) is based on the dark, surrealist novel of the same name by Peter Currell Brown, adapted by Rutherford to have a happy ending.

Rutherford has said that the album was unexpectedly difficult to create, as he had never before realized the extent to which he relied on the other members of Genesis to help make decisions and handle certain aspects of the music. However, he added that it was a good learning experience for him, since it forced him to learn more about vocals, drums, and keyboards than he had known before.

Allmusic thoroughly panned the album in a retrospective review, saying that Mike Rutherford was incapable of writing "even one memorable song". They also claimed that David Hentschel's production work had "marred" the Genesis albums Duke and ...And Then There Were Three..., and that it had a similarly disastrous effect on Smallcreep's Day.

This record was released at a time when my interest in Genesis was at it's peak, so I'd also quickly grab up any solo efforts that were released by Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips. Mike and Tony's early solo output was nowhere near as prolific as the others, but the both did some very nice things. After finishing up my recent video for "Ripples" I thought I'd go ahead and try and do something for a couple of the solo things from the period that I had always liked. Hopefully, I'll have something up for a track from Tony's A Curious Feeling album soon (and of course more Genesis!).....till then....

Hope you enjoy this one!

Dedicated to my old friend, Oscar Peña.

[Lyrics]
It's been so many years since I saw your face,
But now I'm home again back in my old place
And though you're not quite sure you think you see me by the door
I'll be there.

When the winter comes knocking on the door
And you've the firelight dancing on the floor
In the dead of night when every star is burning bright
I'll be there

Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
and after all is said, is said and done
Oh God you'll never know
Just how lonely life can be for me.

So let me tell you now what it's like to be
The one whose memories are scattered on the sea
When the wind goes down you'll see them lying all around.

On a cloudy day, high up in the sky
There's a lonely bird who's sailing round and round
Looking for a place to land down on the ground, for a while
Over and over again
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I'll be there.

Deep within the darkness I'm the shadow next to yours
I'll be there.

Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
And after all is said, is said and done
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I'll be there. prog abacab
