Anil Kamalagharan is best known as the front man of South London 3-piece rock band, Mirrorkicks. Mirrorkicks released their self-produced self-titled debut album on Fruit Pie Records in 2010. Singles, Turning Up, Anything, Podium and On TV were each play listed on over 40 UK radio station, championed by XFM’s John Kennedy and Kerrang!’s Alex Baker. The band were heavily involved in the Save BBC 6Music protests and performed at 6Fest.

The band’s firm relationship with award-winning director Steve Price culminated in videos for Podium, On TV, You and the band’s tongue in cheek cover of Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love. The band directed their own animated video for Lego and Be Where You Are and collaborated with NFTS to create an innovative low budget video for Anything. The band’s videos have been shown on MTV2, Virgin and NME TV. The band also appeared on BBC3’s Upstaged.

Mirrorkicks have just recorded a four track EP at Steve Winwood’s studio with award-winning technician and producer, James Towler. The EP will be released in February 2011 and marks a new, darker direction for the group.

The band’s final single, You from Mirrorkicks is out on 15th November 2010.

Anil’s lucky break came at 18 when he caught the attention of Imogen Heap with his experimental approach to guitar; he played with crocodile clips, ebows, violin bows and sampled himself live. He went on to tour internationally with Imogen and performed to an audience of 26,000 in Osaka, Japan supporting Yaiko. The performance was released on DVD by Aozora Records and reached number 18 in the Japanese Album Charts. During this period Anil also performed with Frou Frou, Imogen Heap’s collaboration with Seal/Bjork/Madonna/Britney Spears producer Guy Sigsworth.

On returning to the UK Anil moved to Bristol and became involved in several projects including a collaborative project with Bjork technician/programmer Russell Kearney, a solo acoustic project with cellist Beth Porter which resulted in him recording with Dickie Chappell at Peter Gabriel’s Realworld studios and performing at Classical FM DJ Ben Eshmade’s Arctic Circle. During this time, Anil sang and played guitar for swing jazz meets drum and bass band The Fabrics, headlining at Ashton Court Festival and performing at Glastonbury several times. Anil also performed as a solo artist at the festival.

In November 2010, Anil became co-founder and co-director of London Contemporary Voices. The choir had it’s debut performance at the Imogen Heap’s Royal Albert Hall show premiering her orchestral score for her film Love the Earth. The performance was streamed in high definition and was broadcast to over half a million viewers worldwide. Conducted by Rene Bergaron, the choir also performed Earth with Imogen and beatboxer Shlomo during her live set.

The choir will be peforming Love the Earth again with Docklands Symphonia on 3rd December 2010.

Anil is also currently working with director/producer/actor Deepak Verma’s Pukkanasha Films on helping arrange and perform the music for his next film.
