A hammer on and a pull off are used in conjunction with an open string, using the bar to create the note, not just with your open hand. On a hammer on, you pluck the string and set your bar down. You play it once, but setting the bar down creates another note. A pull off is just the opposite of that, where you pluck the note, then pull the bar off. Find out more in the video.
