Broom Bezzums are an English folk band based in Germany. Their CDs and concerts feature traditional songs and tunes and quite a few of their own compositions. So why have they covered a German pop song?

For those of you who don't know, "Soehne Mannheims" reached number 2 in the German and Austrian singles charts in 2004 with Und wenn ein Lied. The song has had constant mainstream radio play ever since. It has become a German classic - almost a folk song.

While touring so much in Germany with Broom Bezzums, Mark and Andrew realised a song that everyone knew and could sing along with in their own language would be a powerful way of bonding with audiences. They didn't have to search long for the right song - Andrew had just learned Und wenn ein Lied and threw it in as an extra song while Broom Bezzums were supplying the music for the annual party at Mark's football club. The audience went wild! So they tried it at a string of intimate gigs with almost always the same effect. The arrangement developed over time, the band came up with an English version of the chorus and it wasn't long before people were asking which album it was on.

Despite the song being so popular with audiences in Germany, Mark and Andrew were also aware that it meant little to anyone in the English speaking world and were therefore unwilling to put it on an album. So the idea came to do a studio recording of the song, together with occasional Bezzum Katie Doherty, and give it away to fans in the form of a video and mp3 download.
