For Love (2012) Dedicated lovingly to my husband.
This piece is a rich tapestry of slow building blocks, expressing the ebb & flow, fluidity and unpredictable nature of love. That it is a beautiful, and uncontrollable thing, full of intricacy, complexity, subtlety and transparency.

For Love comes from my new solo album Family Portraits. A collection of 11 solo piano pieces dedicated to my ancestors and loved ones. An aural family tree, created from a desire to preserve the little that is known for my future generations. The pieces capture the love, humour and sadness of a small and geographically disparate family.

Coming from a migrant family meant that I grew up with a sense of envy and longing to feel more deeply embedded in life. I embarked on the Family Portraits project after my grandmother passed away in early 2010. I felt lucky to have finally met her in my adult life, and that we had sat together and written down what she knew of her ancestors. Her death however, triggered the mourning of another lost connection in our small chain, and a desire to salvage some memories for my children.

Composed and performed by Andrea Keller on solo piano using the Boss RC50 loop station, Line 6 delay pedal and preparations. Family Portraits was created as part of Keller's two-year Australia Council Fellowship program (2010-2012).

Four of the tracks were recorded live in concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre in the Salon on February 10, 2012. The remaining seven tracks were recorded at the same venue on June 18, 2012 (without an audience).

Andrea Keller

Since the release of her first album in 2000, jazz pianist and composer Andrea Keller has established herself as an important contributor to Australian jazz and contemporary music. Described as having "one of Australia's most consistently interesting musical minds" (Doug Spencer 2007), she has released several albums as leader and co-leader, and her compositions and performances can be heard on many others.

Her originality and distinctive style has led to invitations to compose music for the Australian Art Orchestra, Mike Nock's BigSmallBand, the Bennetts Lane Big Band, Ten Part Invention, Seraphim Trio, Four Winds Festival, and the Children's Hospital's Hush Collection. As a performer she is best know for her award winning ensemble the Andrea Keller Quartet and her re-workings of the music of Bela Bartok and Wayne Shorter.

Among Keller's list of achievements are three ARIA Awards, three Australian Jazz Bell Awards, an Art Music Award, and fellowships from the MCA/Freedman Foundation and the Australia Council. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Improvisation (Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Master of Arts (Research) from Queensland University of Technology.

"Her work is always lit brightly by the spark of originality."
Roger Mitchell, 2012.

"Pianist Andrea Keller is a major talent on the thriving Australian scene... Apart from being an outstanding piano player, Keller has the gift for writing totally distinctive and engaging compositions."
Bev Stapleton, AllAboutJazz.com, 2006.
