EMPATHY
Raga Darbari Kannada exemplifies the totality and grandeur of Indian Classical Music. Stately and transcendent in character, this Raga is associated with the courts of the Mughal emperors. It is normally played at midnight, and its expression is that of regal wisdom, leonine stature and deep fulfillment touched with the inevitable sadness in our transitory lives. It is said that Darbari Kannada is the King of Ragas, and in a sense it is, as it pertains to the noblest part of the human being.
The artists have chosen to perform this Raga in Khayal style, where the entire exposition is based on a vocal form. It is performed on this recording a three different tempos: vilambit (extended or slow) madhya-drut (medium-fast) and ati-drut (presto)- all of them adhering to a rhythmic cycle of Teental (16 beats).
The second piece on this recording is a folk-song melody, which is lilting and at the same time speaks of the bittersweet lives of the Indian people. This dhun is played in a rhythmic cycle of six beats called Dadra Tal.
- AMIT CHATTERJEE
THE ARTISTS:
Amit Chatterjee received his training in North Indian (Hindusthani) classical music from his mother, Mrs. Manju Chatterjee, a singer of the distinguished Vishnupur and Patiala styles. However, his playing became strongly in␣luenced by Ustad Rais Khan, the great sitar maestro of the Indore gharana (lineage).
Amit Chatterjee plays in the khyal-gayaki ang, a style that emulates singing - not only in technique, but also in temperament, pacing and improvisational concepts.
Polash Gomes born in a Bengali Catholic family in Kolkata, India. He is an accomplished tabla player lives in New York area. He is a disciple of Dr. Mrinal Pal and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, from the line of the distinguished Lucknow Baj, one of the most respected styles of tabla school. He is the founder of the Rageshree Music institute, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination of Indian Music in the West.
