John Grubbs: "I don't remember the year, but it was George Toler on bass, Barry Pate on keyboards, me on drums and of course Walter, Shine and Sometimes John on guitar and those great harmonies. If my memory is correct, Don Davis who produced several records for Johnny Cash and was also a Nashville session musician somehow heard "Bad Case" (I think through Carl Gates II), liked it and suggested they record it. Carl knew Barry and George from playing in bands with them. I was a new kid on the block and hadn't been playing very long but I had sat in a little with Carl so that's how he knew me. Anyway, Carl asked us if we would play on the record and of course we said yes. We rehearsed a few times with Walter, Shine and John at Hudy Green's Supper Club in Summerdale. We learned 4 or 5 songs and a few days later loaded up in a big red Pontiac Carl had and headed to Muscle Shoals. George and I may have had ten dollars between us, but Carl said he would pay our room and board and he put us up at the Holiday Inn. The next day we went to FAME studios and recorded I think 4 songs. At that point and time, I didn't know the significance that FAME was having on the music industry. There were major hit records coming out of that studio and huge acts were recording there, not to mention the swampers. Of course we didn't meet anyone famous there but I did get to play on Roger Hawkins drum kit..pretty cool. We spent the day there and then drove to Nashville to another recording studio where the tape was mixed. It was a great experience and I'm so glad Carl Gates II included me in it. The record never did anything, but it is a great testament to the great vocals and harmonies of Walter, Shine and sometimes John. It also established a relationship with them that allowed me to play drums with them several years at Gulf Gate Lodge and later in Shines house band at Sam and Shines in Gulf Shores."
