The Allan Johnston Band - The Siege Of Leith - Wellingtons, Ayr - April 2013 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 13, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
The original "siege of Leith" took place in 1560 when a French garrison, of over 3,000 experienced troops, established there as support to Mary Queen Of Scots was besieged by protestant & English forces. Leith had been well fortified by the French and it took some months to defeat them. This song refers to more recent times when the Leith community protested against the owner of Forth Ports' decision to build a new ocean liner terminal there and name it Edinburgh Harbour. Leithers being proud of their identity do not consider themselves to be part of Edinburgh and took this as a gross insult. Allan Johnston appeared performing his song on BBC national news and 24 hours later the campaign was won.
