129. Roll, Alabama, Roll (Traditional American) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 05, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
A sea shanty about the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Built in Britain under the hull number 290, she was commissioned and armed in the Azores, and in the course of two years sailed to the South Pacific and back, capturing and destroying 65 US merchant ships and one warship on the way. Under Captain Raphael Semmes, she famously fought the USS Kearsarge under his former roommate Captain John Winslow off Cherbourg in June 1864. Captain Semmes was rescued by a British yacht.

I learned it from The Cumberland Three, a '60s group which included members of the Highwaymen and Kingston Trio.
