A Medley of "It’s A Long, Long Way to Tipperary" and “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile”
“It’s A Long, Long Way to Tipperary” is a British music hall song written by Jack Judge and co-credited to Henry James “Harry” Williams. It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”, the original printed music calls it “It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary.” It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I.

Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag

“Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile” is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of “George Asaf”, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916.

This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call “Fall In.” This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes.

Included is a Full Score and parts for full band.

A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Many of his arrangements can be found on Sheet Music Plus and JV MUSIC. www.jvmusic.net
