Burdened by Regret, Bleakheart Mourn By the “Weeping Willow” (Video Premiere)

Published: April 30, 2024

Grief is a heavy thing, but it’s also an emotion that takes a lot of space and time to process. In their new video for “Weeping Willow,” Bleakheart explore this with a different lens than usual, putting extra emphasis on representing the space and stillness that come with dealing with difficult emotions like this. The band’s dark, explorative rock, expanded by a string quartet, creates a lush sense of space — like the video’s intricate and dark surroundings, they spin up melancholic surroundings drenched in mystery. Taken from their upcoming album Silver Pulse, “Weeping WIllow” features dual vocals from Kiki GaNun and Kelly Schilling that wander down gloomy paths, both delicate and haunting. Watch the video here:

Silver Pulse has a meditative quality to it, but it takes a full listen (which you’ll have to wait a few weeks for!) to really grasp its full shape. There’s an unexpected heaviness to it, partially seen on this track, that isn’t so much a deliberate choice as a culmination of everything else that plays out — like gentle ripples in water eventually building into a wave. It’s not what we usually cover here, but absolutely worth experiencing.

Schilling comments:

The song itself is about the regret felt in losing someone to the taking of their own life, wishing that we could have prevented it, while the video comes from the perspective of the weight sorrow can have on a person, the inescapable suffering one can feel. We wanted to create a visual representation of these feelings, but abstract and stylish, inspired by Twin Peaks, Daughters of Darkness, and “Machine Heart” by Mitski. The wheel, representing a continuous cycle of suffering, the fabric an inescapable cloud for the characters dancing in shadow, trying to escape, but only later drowning in black controlled by the arbiters of the dream room. With Kiki and I both being the arbiters and the dancers, it reflects how all of us can sometimes be our own worst enemies, how at times it is difficult to escape our sorrowful cycles.

Silver Pulse releases May 24th via via Seeing Red Records.
