SONG PREMIERE: Rainy Eyes Chooses Not to Settle For Less with Simmering Blues-soul Tune “You Just Want What You Can’t Have”

Published: May 14, 2024

Rainy Eyes is a young Lafayette, Louisiana-based singer/songwriter by way of Bergen, Norway where she was born and raised. After leaving home and moving to Denmark at 18, she met and fell in love with an American free jazz musician. The couple eloped to San Francisco, where Rainy embedded herself in the local music scene, befriending musicians like Peter Rowan, Sam Grisman, and Ric Robertson. Following the birth of her son, Rainy’s marriage quickly deteriorated. Living in a cabin in Bolinas, CA just north of San Francisco, she began writing and demoing songs prolifically to cope with her heartbreak.

As the relationship with her ex turned ever more untenable, she’d leave the Bay area for South Louisiana, drawn by the music and culture of the tradition-rich region. Forging a relationship with acclaimed musician and producer Dirk Powell, who encouraged her to further develop the ideas she’d be working on while in California, together, they’d hunkered down in Powell’s studio on the bayou, determined to fulfill the promise of what she’d begun. The result is her second studio album, Lonesome Highway. It’s a hope-filled and assertive collection of 11 roots and Americana-based songs that finds Rainy Eyes breaking cycles, trusting the universe, and allowing the higher self to lead the way.

Today Glide is excited to premiere “You Just Want What You Can’t Have,” a standout track that perfectly showcases Rainy’s ability to marry a simmering style of Southern blues-soul music that feels practically made for a darkly lit New Orleans nightclub. Backed by slinky guitar and organ, the song is a beautiful slowburner that sees Rainy playing the crooner while also giving plenty of space to her talented band to show off their chops. Ultimately, this tune proofs she is definitely an artist on the rise.

“As William Bell so perfectly put it and Otis sang with deep conviction: ‘You don’t miss your water till your well runs dry.’ I fully embraced that sentiment and wrote ‘You Just Want What You Can’t Have’ in that same spirit. It is a truthful slap in the face for anyone who doesn’t appreciate what they have until it’s gone, and a reminder to not settle for less.” – Rainy Eyes
