All bands have a story, here's ours. Chris and 'B' met years ago through mutual interests and friends. Though they remained friends, they were not musically linked for a couple of years. The first project they worked in was a three piece called "Catfish and the Bottomfeeders", where they joined up with friend and future Flapjack, Andy 'Catfish' Manes. At that time Johnson was on the washtub, 'B' was playing a djembe hand drum and 'Catfish' had lead guitar and vocal duties. That was fun, but short lived.

A couple more years passed, Chris had gotten his first banjo and was getting things worked out.

At a Labor Day party at the Johnson's is where Matt came into the picture. He and Chris met and got to talking and soon found out that their musical interests were not only on the same page, but from the same paragraph. After an evening of pickin', they decided to pick more often. The search was on, a few different guys came and went, one of them being 'Catfish'. During the early time, Chris had been splitting time between the tub and banjo. Then 'B' entered the Flapjacks to take over washtub duties, as Johnson's banjo skills were becoming nicely honed. Chris, Matt and 'B' began playing shows and having fun, and people came and were having fun, but something was lacking.

A random open mic night is where James came in. After talking to him and finding out that he had a love affair with the slide guitar, he was invited to sit in some practices.

It worked. The sound was full, vibrant and even more fun than before but with so much more fun yet to be had. They soon went into Old School Studios (actually housed in an old school) to begin work with Cass Libbers on their debut album, which was released July 8, 2006 to a maximum capacity crowd at the Lafayette Brewing Co. Through the spring and summer of '07 Fiddlin' Billy Brand was makin' regular guest appearances and eventually moved back to town and is now back in the line-up to complete the sound the band had been lookin' for. So there-in lies the tale of the birth of 'The Woodstove Flapjacks String Band'. Stay tuned for more to come. Five guys just tryin to get through life on good looks, charm, and impeccable body odor; it wasn't workin out, so they turned to music.

The Flapjacks have been fortunate enough to share the stage with the likes of The Drew Emmitt Band, Foghorn Stringband, The Wilders, J.B. Beverly and the Wayward Drifters, The Rev. Payton's Big Damn Band and The Forge Mountain Diggers.
