Michael blowing the bellows for J S Bach's Fugue in g BWV 578 (Noordwolde) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 11, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
In the days of J.S. Bach, the organ could only sound with the help of an organ-blower. The ancient Freytag-organ in Noordwolde (the Netherlands), beautifully restored by Dutch organ-builder Mense Ruiter, still has the original device to make this possible. As a result, the sound is more supple and fluent than by using the organ's motor. Michael Kruiper blows the bellows, while Willem Tanke plays J.S. Bach's fugue in g minor BWV 578 ('the Little'). Recording: Marcel van den Tol, 2008. Additional note, January 2017: regarding my Bach-interpretation in general I now intend to apply the flexibility of the air supply to tempo, i.e. stretching the tempo via an expressive rubato according to the character and structure of a passage, without losing the regular pulse.
