Calgary's World Music Artist, real-time Composer without notation, self-created genre (INTUITIVE improvisation); self-taught, non classical, non traditional, all original / independent works - Calgary based artist of 18 + years amateur and professional experiences combined. Having released over 13 + independent albums since 1998, including two compilations "Embark" (c)2000-2009 (may be purchased at cdbaby.com/vian1) and "Vi An" (p)+(c)1998-2011. Countless collaborations with artists all around the globe! Currently producing three new original albums for solo long zithers and one for duets with percussion featuring her Husband - Matt.
Vi An is passionate towards collaborations and has worked with musicians and artists of all genres of music, along with dance, visual art and theatre. In 2006, Vi An, along with musical colleagues received the BETTY MITCHELL award for "best sound design and original music" for a play or musical, with the Green Fools Theatre Company's production of "Dancing On Water" (water puppetry at the Glenbow Museum) inspired by the secret art of Vietnamese water puppetry.
Vi An has a unique improvisational style and describes herself as an -- "intuitive improviser" (tuning an instrument to any key and sometimes random scales, this artist finds the enthusiasm, joy and inspiration from within herself and in her surrounds -- audience included), to freely compose a unique once-in-a-lifetime piece of music. "The fleeting nature of my music and the mystery of it all is where I feel most at home, and fulfilled - simply trusting in the creative process! The mood and atmosphere of the intuitively improvised piece are the determining factors of flow, structure and story or form which encapsulate the piece in that moment for the audience. Rarely can pieces be repeated, for the muses they arrive and they take their eventual leave" - Vi An.
She adds: "Responding from the gut, all feelings from the heart and from sensations on my finger tips, interacting with inner, and outer stimuli". "I don't know where my first note comes from, nor when the last note ends; I simply fall into the moment willingly and completely, giving myself over to the beautiful mystery."
