The Verve Music Group's 2004 relaunch of its legendary Verve Forecast imprint made a powerful aesthetic statement. The label's timely return invoked both a storied history and a set of high musical standards. The revived Verve Forecast, which now serves as home to all of the non-jazz artists under the Verve Music Group umbrella, maintains the same emphasis on creativity and individuality that was established during the its earlier tenure.
Verve Forecast (initially known as Verve Folkways) was originally launched in 1967 by Verve executive Jerry Schoenbaum, as an outlet for a fearless new generation of musicians and songwriters. The new label went against standard music-industry practice by adopting the then-radical stance of nurturing artistry and developing long-term careers, rather than working to generate hit singles.
The label introduced some of the era's most adventurous and influential artists, including rock innovators the Blues Project, and seminal singer/songwriters Richie Havens, Tim Hardin, Janis Ian and Laura Nyro. Verve Forecast also released albums by folk icons Odetta, Dave Van Ronk and the New Lost City Ramblers, and by blues legends John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Leadbelly and James Cotton.
Verve Forecast continued to release challenging new music by artists on the cutting edge of popular culture until the dawn of the '70s, when corporate shuffles led to its dissolution. But the Verve Forecast legacy has continued to resonate through contemporary music, as many vintage Forecast releases came to be recognized as classics, and as the label's progressive attitude has continued to serve as an example for subsequent generations of artists and listeners.
The Verve Forecast tradition of innovation and creative integrity continues in the label's present incarnation. The revitalized imprint achieved early breakthroughs with versatile vocalist Lizz Wright and charismatic singer/pianist Jamie Cullum, and has made subsequent waves with such young acts as New York club favorites Brazilian Girls, eclectic British combo Guillemots, and widely-touted young singer/songwriter/instrumentalists Jackie Greene and Teddy Thompson. Also prominent on the Verve Forecast roster are such established acts as Grammy-nominated blues-rock singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and acclaimed pop-rock tunesmith (and sometime Old 97s frontman) Rhett Miller.
"The albums released on Verve/Forecast during the 1960s and 1970s were by dynamic talents who not only spoke to their generation, but continue to influence many established and aspiring artists today," comments Ron Goldstein, President/CEO of the Verve Music Group. "By re-launching Forecast, we are continuing the label's tradition of fostering great talents at a time when music lovers are re-embracing the true artistry of this genre."
