Venom Lords draw parallels between the zombies of George A. Romero and the atrocities of George W. Bush on Dead Hate You, a dozen tales of grounded, run-for-your-life punk. Singer/guitarist couple Dan and Gina Knapik play a kind of new-dawn proto emo without being sappy. “Waiting For The End” and “Another Hell” peek out the window, lock the door, say their goodbyes, but somehow stay fast and in love. “Zombie House” closes with whispered twee, proving fatalism can be kind of cute, too (if a bit silly). There aren’t enough good bands out there with a really sexy frontwoman. But search no further than Chicago’s own Venom Lords and Gina Knapik. With her husky and ’80s-esqe rock whine set to catchy drum beats and guitar riffs you can just imagine her stomping her way over man after man to get what she wants. In a world of too much over-production, the straight out of the garage quality seems to lend itself to this particular group and the heavily structured rock they lay down. Particularly notable is the slow rocker “Texas Kills” and the disturbingly catchy “Parachute Pants.” With a little more refinement and a clear vision, this is a band to keep your eye on. "Formed by veterans of the Pillowmints and Not Rebecca, The Venom Lords are another two-girl, two-guy quartet, but they're aiming for more of a stripped-down and danceable New Wave of New Wave sound: You can tell by the black shirts and white ties, as well as by the song structures, which are part Blondie or Joan Jett and part early '90s English shoegazer rock. They haven't quite perfected their sound on their self-titled eight-song EP, but guitarist-vocalist Gina Knapik has personality to spare, and she and Dan Knapik unleash a powerful two-guitar attack on songs such as "Parachute Pants" and "Witch King." The Chicago foursome hits the road for a show at Viele's Planet, 126 E. Jefferson in Springfield, at 7 p.m. Saturday. You also can check them out at www.venomlords.com."

"If Nancy Sinatra were to smoke opium while cruisin down the highway in a cherry red 1968 Oldsmobile convertible, you'd have the Venom Lords.
