Visions (CR09103)

In this age of rapid music consumption, everyone wants to label music, as well as the bands performing it. But how do you label a band whose music has been called ‘jazz’, but is not – ‘rock’n’roll’ and ‘sixties psychedelia’, yet is both and neither? Instrumental music, performed solely on drums and Hammond organ; melodic yet monotonous, sometimes smooth and melancholic, sometimes exploding and intensely groovy?

The short answer is: You don’t. You don’t need to. There is no single generic term that fully explains the music made by Trummor & Orgel. Still, after three full-length albums and an EP, they have gained a reputation in Swedish music life that is irrefutable. Add to that hundreds of celebrated live performances and a long-term relationship with Swedish n:o 1 rock vocalist – Ebbot Lundberg of Soundtrack of Our Lives – and you will understand this is certainly something worthy of interest.

Like many other bands, Trummor & Orgel was formed as a side project with no further ambitions of reaching an audience outside the inner circle of friends. Brothers Anders and Staffan Ljunggren had played together a few years when, in the spring of 2003, former bassist Anders discovered the Hammond organ and got to learn to start playing. Beginning to play with drummer Staffan was an obvious choice – the duo Trummor & Orgel was born. Still, it was not until 2005 that the band started playing and rehearsing properly, and the first two promo CDs were recorded promptly with only a few months in between. One of these records found its way to Fredrik Ekander, previously at Sony Music, who was impressed by what he heard. He had recently founded Cosmos Records in Stockholm, and Trummor & Orgel became the first band to sign a record contract. Before the end of the year, a debut album was recorded and released in April 2006 in cooperation with fashionable clothing store NittyGritty.

To make a long story short; more than hundred live shows, several TV and radio appearances, one album and one e.p. have been made since then. In July 2009, Trummor & Orgel’s third full-length album Visions was recorded, and released on November 18. Musically, the retrospective influences have been given way to contemporary strains, but to reach the proper atmosphere the recordings were made on a classic reel-to-reel tape recorder. This record is the first to be released on both CD and vinyl LP, both as usual with the cover made by designer and photographer Fredrik Fogelqvist. The songs are as strong – if not stronger – as on their previous records. This is also perhaps their most coherent record so far; you can tell Trummor & Orgel are starting to find their own idiom. It’s still hard to label the music, but maybe that is how it should be. Trummor & Orgel will – nevertheless – always sound like Trummor & Orgel.

Visions was recognized as one of the top five records to be nominated for a Grammis award (Swedish Grammy Award) for Jazz of the Year 2009.
