Tomorrow Music Orchestra (TMO) is a large ensemble of composers and musicians who are experimenting with the idea that music’s really fun, while exploring its ability to relate to a wide-ranging audience. TMO is a large ensemble that mixes instrumentation from traditional jazz, classical and rock formats, steeped in fresh composition and exploration.

Bassist, composer, and conductor, Matthew Golombisky initially conceived TMO in New Orleans in 2003, but was laid to rest after a single concert. Golombisky moved to New Orleans after completing a B.A. in Jazz Studies/Bass Performance from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. In Asheville, he was a hard working bassist, often playing alongside current TMO guitarist Sam Macy. In New Orleans, he began musical relationships with many players, some of which are current TMO members, including drummer Quin Kirchner and vibraphonist Matthew McClimon. In New Orleans, Golombisky also attended the University of New Orleans and which led to a M.M. in (“classical”) Composition.

After Hurricane Katrina, Golombisky moved to Chicago, finished grad school at Northwestern University, and has become a leader in the creative music community, which has now known as “ears&eyes”. From this he has started an independent record label, ears&eyes Records, and is curating the 3rd Annual “ears&eyes Festival”, which includes local and national musicians, artists, film makers and more.

TMO was rekindled in March 2006 when he was approached by the now defunct, Ice Factory, to perform a group of his choosing. Ideas for something big immediately started brewing and he put together a group of nine musicians to re-ignite TMO. Macy, Kirchner, and McClimon were included, along with alto saxophonist Caroline Davis (Zing!, Pedway), trumpeter James Davis (Zing!, Maurice), violinist Hanna Mathey (Philip Morris), cellist Katy Myers (Minneolpis Henrys, Dialogue), and trombonist Jonathon Kirk (backGammon, Maurice). TMO kicked off with an eclectic and powerful performance, and has only matured and gained momentum since.

Currently, there are almost 30 members on the TMO roster and include players from all sorts of backgrounds. Violinist Lori Ashikawa, cellist Katinka Kleijn, and bassist Doug Johnson perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Clarinetist Pablo Chin and Kirk are working towards a Ph.D in composition from Northwestern University. Saxophonist Charles Gorczynski’s electronic duo, Silences Sumire, recently was signed to Ropeadope. Kirchner has recently been touring with afro-beat band, NOMO. (see below for a full roster)

TMO performances vary in energy, size, and volume. You can catch TMO at local rock venues, such as Beat Kitchen and Martyrs’ to hear a full-on aural assault, shifting through odd metered grooves and clever shifts in feeling and texture. You can also hear TMO on a more relaxed scale, where Golombisky is often conducting his group through beautiful melodies and rich harmonic content that can both lift or confuse your spirits. And then, there’s everything in between. The musical color choices from the varied instrumentation are stirring and used to create any affect Golombisky seeks.

This group is a spectacle to see and hear. How do they fit all of those people on that stage? They often don’t; members often spill over into the crowd. It’s exciting. It’s unorthodox. The musical, textural, composed, and improvised explorations are stimulating and enthralling. This is a group to experience, to be sure.

Currently, Golombisky is composing a concerto for TMO and bassist Larry Grenadier (Brad Mehldau Trio, Charles Lloyd, Kurt Rosenwinkel). Grenadier was inspired and eager to meet Golombisky after hearing TMO’s second record, neon jesus garage (ears&eyes Records, 2006). Grenadier mentions this exciting collaboration in Bass Player magazine (Nov. 2007).

PRESS:

"Boasting an impressive musical repertoire and instrumental arsenal, the Tomorrow Music Orchestra, founded and led by bassist/composer Matthew Golombisky, routinely fluctuates in size and stylistic range. The ambitious ensemble employs the services of up to 25 musicians and fuses jazz with classical music, experimental passages and riffs befitting marching bands—their performances are easily worth the price of admission (which is usually cheap). .Many of the group’s pieces are not uplifting, major-key tunes, but its maxim is that 'music is fun.' Indeed, if you like fun, shape-shifting music of many moods, you won’t want to miss this." --Scott Morrow, Center Stage Chicago & Sun Times

"Tomorrow Music Orchestra takes its cues from former Crescent City resident and bassist Matthew Golombisky. While its name surely conjures the sci-fi aura of Sun Ra, the TMO is altogether more tonal and more minimal, diving deep into Steve Reich and Philip Glass territory." --TimeOut Chicago
